Mission Statement:

“To keep our ship’s memory alive for future generations, provide assistance to our crew, and support those still serving.”

The 'Association' banner at the top and 'Mission Statement' above is not real. But, it could be.

“To keep our ship's memory alive for future generations, …” We would encourage our members to help keep USS Anchorage (LSD 36) memory alive. What is Gator Navy? What was so special about USS Anchorage (LSD 36)? Answers, along with individual stories or experiences, would be shared with anyone who will listen. Schools, churches, youth groups, friends, etc.

“... provide assistance to our crew, ..." There are times when our shipmates may need financial help with utility bills, automobile expenses, or food. Maybe just someone to talk to. We would like to have the ability to offer some level of help.

“... and support those still serving." A percentage of our fundraising could be set aside to support today’s sailor. Our board would determine the best use of funds.

Which non-profit option is best for us? If we were to apply, there are several options; one such option is a 501(c)(19) which refers to a tax-exempt organization that specifically benefits Veterans of the U.S. Armed Services. An attorney would be best suited to help us select the right option.

How much will it cost to become a non-profit? I met with Harbor Compliance, a non-profit compliance specialist, to discuss their services and fees. Depending on the amount of work they do, their fee is $1600.00 to $3000.00+. Money raised as of 11/2022 is $123.60. I would like to find an individual or business to provide us with a Founders Loan or to become our 'Major Sponsor' by covering the entire expense.

What would the association name be? Because USS Anchorage (LPD 23) exists, any association name we select should include our hull number. Examples: USS Anchorage (LSD 36) Crew Member Association, LSD36 Historical Society, USS Anchorage (LSD 36) Association, etc.

How many board members would we need? A minimum number of board members would be required and our meetings would be held online.

Would we have committees? Yes. Volunteers would also be needed for a few select committees.

Should we include USS Anchorage (LPD 23)? I had mentioned becoming a non-profit at the recent reunion, and USS Anchorage (LPD 23) commissioning CO CAPT Joel G. Stewart, who attended, contacted me afterwards suggesting we include his ship. With both ships being represented, the younger demographics and increased membership over the coming years would ensure long-term survival of the association. Our reunion would continue to be held separately.

Let me know your thoughts on becoming a non-profit and the possibility of including USS Anchorage (LPD 23).
